4-Inch vs. 6-Inch Roof Vents: How to Choose

The correct roof vent starts with the duct system—not the size that looks most convenient on the roof. A 4-inch vent and a 6-inch vent serve different airflow and connection requirements, so the existing or specified duct diameter should guide the decision.

Match the duct diameter

Use a 4-inch roof vent for a system designed around 4-inch round duct and a 6-inch roof vent for a system designed around 6-inch round duct. Avoid reducing a larger duct simply to fit a smaller cap unless the appliance manufacturer and applicable code allow it. An undersized termination can add resistance and reduce system performance.

Choose a collared or non-collared model

A collared roof vent provides a defined round connection below the hood. It is useful when the round duct will connect directly to the roof termination. A non-collared model may be appropriate when the installer is using a different transition or site-specific connection. Review the product drawing and roof assembly before deciding.

Decide whether a damper is required

Some applications call for a damper to help limit backdrafts when the exhaust system is off. Other systems already include a damper or require a termination without one. Confirm the appliance instructions, local code, and the selected product variant. Do not add multiple dampers where they could interfere with airflow or service.

Consider finish and environment

Galvanized steel is a practical choice for many roof installations. Black and brown options can coordinate with common roof colors where available. Regardless of finish, installation quality matters: the roof penetration must be flashed and sealed using methods appropriate for the roof system and local weather conditions.

Check pack quantity and dimensions

Roof vents may be sold in package quantities rather than as single pieces. Confirm the “Sold as” or box-quantity specification on the product page, along with overall dimensions and collar size.
